Undead Gods by Caitlyn Battelle

I am… unwell. My husband watches on as I sob hysterically over that ending because what do you mean the last person she looked to was her sister? I am going to dehydrate from how hard I’m crying.

Onto my criticism of some reviews I’ve seen:

Are we forgetting our girl is horrifically traumatized??? “She and Topp have been together for ages, she should be better at communicating!!!” Did we read the same prologue? I would be shit at communicating too if I had been groomed to fear my imminent death during my formative years. None of that was even remotely normal, we can’t expect her to come out of it normal.

Gage. 🥰 That’s it. Just him.

All. She. Experiences. Is. Grief. The one thread I can find through the whole narrative is grief. The grief of her actions. The grief of her lies. The grief of her betrayal. And the grief of her loneliness. It’s so fucking powerful and eviscerating.

I might be obsessed with Topp. (This take aged poorly)

BEATRIZ IS RIGHT ABOUT GAGE, LET THE WOMAN COOK.

(On to why it aged poorly) Topp, no. I was rooting for you, WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU.

What a fucking /tragic/ goodbye between Topp and Elysia. A smutty scene has literally never made me cry before.

I don’t know. I need to recover but I don’t think I ever will.

“The most important of which was Elysia Parker exploding through her porcelain mask. Shards and fragments of the doll she had been flew like shrapnel through the air. Composure broken, she found a vicious, vengeance-bent version of herself waiting to emerge. The Crown-welded collar and leash lay demolished, brittle pieces scattered on the floor.”
