Lost in Time by Melissa de la Cruz
I really loved the evolving dynamic between Mimi and Oliver, one of the highlights of the story for sure. Mimi’s growth in general was one of the only things that drove the narrative for me and kept me reading.
Around chapter 13, it really seemed like Schuyler was remembering who tf she is and that she’s a bad bitch. Immediately, chapter 16, back to the boring, simpering, pathetic fool she’s turned into. It was this brief, shining glimpse of what she could be if she wasn’t so subservient to Jack. (Still detest their relationship and their dynamic.)
The timeline was… confusing. We had 3 POC’s. Schuyler, Mimi, Allegra (with a Jack or Oliver thrown in on occasion for clarity). There was no tense designation, so it appeared Allegra’s POV was happening in tandem with Schuyler and Mimi’s POV’s because theirs were in tandem, following the same trail. With Allegra being out of the coma now and how the last book ended with her going out to search for Charles, it made sense that her POV would be that journey. It wasn’t. It was her origin story. How she betrayed Charles for her human familiar. However, I had to piece that together from context clues which took me out of the story a bit.
Deming was the only truly interesting character in the last book and we got exactly one POV from her this time that was a couple of pages long. We got virtually nothing from her and it was wildly upsetting. I loved the way she viewed and interacted with the world. Truly unfortunate she was so lacking in page time.
All in all, I’m vibrating with anticipation to shelve this series and never come back to it again.
