Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
I am so unbelievably disappointed in myself for taking so long to read this book. It sat in my Amazon cart for months while I bought other books because I was nervous it wouldn’t live up to the hype. It lives up to the hype.
Evangeline has a tendency to be a bit irritating but in a realistic and not bothersome way. She’s irritating because of how good and compassionate she is. While she doesn’t make the most stellar of decisions, she’s doing her best to be a good person, and I really feel like she’s coming from a mostly wholesome place in everything she does.
Jacks? Chefs kiss. God, what a man. He’s an agent of chaos in all the best ways and I cannot get enough of him. Here’s hoping book 2 features him more than book 1 did because I was gobbling that man up in every scene he was in. The crypt? Hell yeah.
I didn’t love the Apollo/Evangeline scenes because of the obvious ick factor of him being enchanted. I don’t care if his feels were real because Jacks willed it so or not. The man was basically divinely roofied???? Thank god Evangeline had the good sense to keep her distance from him physically until Jacks undid his enchantment.
Marisol is… I don’t know. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions about her but none of them really make any sense. She doesn’t make sense, though, so I guess that checks out. One thing I loved was how complex her character was overall. I’m still not entirely sure where we landed with her culpability, which is infuriating because I want answers but also amazing because it just shows how good the writing in this book was.
