Initially, Syl and Noah’s back and forth is so funny and charged. The slight bickering adds a layer of tension, but Noah is quick to apologize for his assumptions about Syl’s abilities, though she’s proven to be fairly directionally challenged. The development from casual friendship to emotionally charged and wrought with a new kind of tension is driven well through the story. It’s balanced well with the plot, not leaning too heavily on the romantic tension as a crutch while not sacrificing the important plot points in the meantime to develop it.
Syl is absolutely relatable and her inner world is captivating. All her thoughts make you want to root for her. Strong and capable, resourceful and intelligent, but with a beautiful heart.
Noah is so complex with his grief and confusion. The plot twists within his family tree, his origins, his mother’s pain, it all lends itself to a compelling narrative that hooks you deep.
I was genuinely impressed with the magic system. It was unique, detailed, and well developed through the story. I love that there wasn’t just info dumping about the magic system or world building as a whole, it was all built into the story in a way that made you feel like, “Oh, yeah, that makes perfect sense.”
While it is on the longer side, being an epic, it was well paced. Some parts felt a little more drawn out, but they never got to the point where they dragged. Overall, it’s a fantastic read and incredibly well written.
